    IOSH Managing Safely® training comprises the following modules:

    • Module 1 - Introducing Managing Safely®: the IOSH Managing Safely® Course starts by looking at the moral, legal and financial reasons for managing health and safety responsibly in the workplace
    • Module 2 - Assessing risks: this module focuses on the risk assessment process and risk rating system. Candidates learn exactly what’s defined as a hazard, hazardous event or risk
    • Module 3 - Controlling the risks: IOSH Managing Safely® training then covers how to evaluate risk using a risk matrix, and how to control and reduce these risks. At the end of this module, candidates will understand the definition of the terms ‘reasonably practicable’ and ‘residual risk’
    • Module 4 - Understanding responsibilities: next, the course looks at the difference between criminal law and civil law, and organisations’ legal requirements to protect the health and safety of workers, and other people under their control. This module includes three knowledge tests to help candidates determine ‘reasonably foreseeable’ risks, and provides guidance on where to find further support for working within the law
    • Module 5 - Understanding hazards: the online IOSH Managing Safely® Course then spends time looking at common hazards in the workplace and their effects. Candidates will learn about the six main hazard categories, and how to manage them
    • Module 6 - Investigating incidents: module 6 of IOSH Managing Safely® training focuses on the differences between an incident, accident and near miss, and when an investigation is required. This part of the course also covers what’s needed in an incident report
    • Module 7 - Measuring performance: finally, candidates learn how to assess key performance indicators of good workplace health and safety. This module also covers both internal and external auditing, and the types of evidence required to complete an audit

  • Assessment & Certification

    At the end of the IOSH Managing Safely® Course, candidates are asked to complete a 30-question, multiple-choice theory test and a practical risk assessment task to earn their certification. After the theory test, candidates have two weeks to return the risk assessment, which will be externally assessed by an IOSH-approved marker. A mark of 80% is required to pass.

There are no formal academic or professional prerequisites for taking an IOSH Managing Safely® Course, but the training is primarily aimed at managers, supervisors, and other team leaders. All candidates should have a working understanding of written and spoken English.

Virtual IOSH Managing Safely® Courses require 20 hours of self-paced e-learning. The training concludes with a 45-minute test, and candidates will also be required to complete a practical workplace risk assessment before receiving their certificate.

At Four Storey Training, IOSH-approved Managing Safely® training costs £250 per person. This includes access to an e-learning course rated ‘outstanding’ by the IOSH, and the cost of both a digital and paper certificate upon successful completion.

IOSH Managing Safely® training remains valid for life once completed, and does not formally expire. However, the IOSH recommends that certificate holders complete a refresher course every three years to keep their health and safety knowledge up to date.

The Four Storey IOSH Managing Safely® Course can be completed from any device. Candidates simply need access to a laptop, tablet or desktop computer, and a decent internet connection.
