Who Needs To Complete A SHEA Drains and Sewers Course?

Anyone who works in the utilities industry on foul water, waste water or drainage sites needs to have a SHEA Drains and Sewers Card to show they have completed the necessary safety training to get on-site. This includes operatives, supervisors and managers, as well as contractors and site visitors.

  • Modules

EUSR SHEA Drains and Sewers training covers the same content as the SHEA Core Course, plus two extra modules focused specifically on drains and sewers:

Module 1 - Understanding our workplace responsibilities:
the SHEA Drains and Sewers course begins by looking at workplace safety legislation and the responsibility everyone has to keep themselves, their colleagues, and their work environment safe

Module 2 - Understanding the effects of our work on the environment:
this module is designed to enhance your understanding of environmental awareness and sustainability

Module 3 - Identifying and controlling risks:
next, you’ll learn how to identify and mitigate common risks in the workplace, to keep colleagues and the general public safe

Module 4 - Common hazards in the workplace:
this part of the course focuses on physical hazards, and the control measures that can mitigate these

Module 5 - Occupational health hazards:
you’ll then find out how to spot and prevent possible occupational health hazards, enhancing your safety knowledge further

Module 6 - Responding to emergencies:
this module looks at the procedures to follow and actions required in the event of an emergency

Module 13 - Drains and sewers:
the SHEA Drains and Sewers Course then spends time looking at hazards specific to these environments, and the procedures to follow to mitigate these

Module 14 - Highway working and excavations:
the final module focuses on the hazards, controls and emergency procedures specific to working on highways or excavation sites, which is important for those working in the sewerage and drainage sectors

  • Assessment & Certification

After each module, there is a brief assessment. Delegates need to pass each of these to gain a SHEA Drains and Sewers Card. Your virtual card will be available within three business days via the Vircarda app. A plastic card is also available if needed, and this usually arrives within five working days.

Find Out More About SHEA Drains and Sewers Training

The EUSR, or the Energy & Utility Skills Register, is the UK’s registered body for skills and training in the utilities sector. It aims to standardise training across utilities industries to ensure all workers have the knowledge and skills necessary to keep their colleagues, work environment, and the general public safe.

Safety, Health & Environmental Awareness (SHEA) training is a type of mandatory health and safety training for anyone who works on an operational site in the UK’s utilities sector. The EUSR sets the standards for SHEA training, which is designed to provide workers, contractors and site visitors with the knowledge and skills necessary to keep their workplaces safe and compliant.

SHEA Core training provides delegates with a basic understanding of safety and environmental responsibilities, with more specialised courses aimed at specific sectors, including Water, Power, Gas, and Telecoms.

There are no formal academic or experience requirements for taking a SHEA Drains and Sewers Course. You simply need to provide a form of government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport, and you must have a basic level of spoken and written English.

The SHEA Drains and Sewers Course runs for seven hours, from 9am until 4pm, and is available to book once a fortnight, with days varying. This means there’s a course to suit everyone’s schedule, with both weekday and weekend sessions available.

The total cost of the EUSR SHEA Drains and Sewers Course with Four Storey Training is £155 (+VAT). This includes the cost of online, tutor-led training, as well as your SHEA Drains and Sewers Card.

SHEA Drains and Sewers training is valid for three years from the date of completion. As the three-year mark approaches, training must be renewed in order to stay compliant.

To maintain site access and remain compliant, EUSR SHEA Drains and Sewers training must be renewed every three years. Replacement cards can be ordered via the EUSR, using your EUSR ID - you will also be required to pay a replacement fee.

A SHEA Drains and Sewers Card is recognised by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), but it is not specifically a CSCS Card. However, it does allow holders to access construction sites for utilities purposes without the requirement for a separate CSCS Card.

To complete the SHEA Drains and Sewers Course online, you’ll need access to Microsoft Teams via a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet.
