How to Get a CSCS Green Card

Anyone working in an entry-level labouring position on a construction site in the UK is required to have a CSCS Green Card. Here’s how to apply for your CSCS Labourers’ Card online:

1. Complete a CSCS Green Card course

Firstly, you need to pass the Level 1 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment - the gold standard in entry-level construction certification.

2. Pass the CITB test

Complete the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Health, Safety and Environment Test, included as part of the package with Four Storey Training.

3. Receive your certificate

You’ll then receive your accredited safety certificate, which is vital for applying for your Green CSCS Card.

4. Apply for your CSCS Card

I’ll then order your CSCS Green Card for you, and you’ll be able to get on-site as soon as it arrives

CSCS Green Card Course Details

The all-in-one CSCS Green Card package provides everything you need to get your card at an unbeatable price. The package includes an e-learning course, CITB touchscreen test, and card application, plus unlimited support and a full administration package, with all the necessary booking and ordering processes completed for you.

Unit 1 - Introduction to Health and Safety

The online CSCS Green Card course starts with an introduction to health and safety, covering what hazards and risks are, and what a risk assessment is.

Unit 2 - Health Hazards

In this module, you’ll look at examples of health hazards in the workplace, such as hazardous substances, manual handling, display screen equipment (DSE), and work-related stress.

Unit 3 - Safety Hazards

The next stage of gaining your CSCS Green Card focuses on safety hazards in the workplace, including slips, trips and falls, working at height, and fire and electricity.

Unit 4 - Safe Working Environments

The final unit covers key factors to consider in a safe working environment, as well as the importance of emergency procedures.

The small print

This is not a fast track option.

CSCS cards are a heavily regulated form of certification, and it can take up to a week to receive certification for the e-learning course, as footage from the webcam-proctored remote test must first be scrutinised by the awarding body.

If you need to be on site within a few days, I recommend EUSR's SHEA Core card, which features the CSCS logo and offers a simpler process.

This A to Z package is recommended only for candidates who are competent enough to study the material provided and pass their tests on the first attempt.

Resits are permitted, but will incur a fee, to cover the cost of booking a second test. Please refer to the Refund Policy for further information.

CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme. This is the leading certificate scheme for construction site workers in the UK, providing labourers with the training and qualifications they need to start working on-site.

Anyone working in a labouring position in the construction industry is required to have a CSCS Green Card. This level of CSCS card is intended for entry-level construction workers, rather than those in a skilled profession.

Job roles that require a Green CSCS Card in the construction industry include:

  • Site cleaners
  • Maintenance workers
  • General labourers
  • Groundworkers
  • Material handlers
  • Assistants to skilled trades, such as bricklayers, plumbers or carpenters
  • Landscapers

The first time you qualify for a CSCS Green Card, it will remain valid for two years. After this time, you’ll need to renew it in order to continue working on construction sites. For all subsequent Green CSCS Cards throughout your career, these will remain valid for five years before requiring renewal.

A CSCS Green Card needs to be renewed every two years (for the first card), and every five years for each card held thereafter. To renew or replace a Green CSCS Card, you must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last two years, then you can apply for a new card from CSCS. The cost of renewing your CSCS Green Card online is £36*.

No - unless you hold a relevant NVQ, completing a CSCS Green Card course is the only way to prove you have the safety knowledge required for construction site access.

The different levels of CSCS cards are as follows:

  • Green: for labourers and other general construction workers who don’t have a formal NVQ
  • Red: these are temporary cards for apprentices and other trainees
  • Blue: for skilled workers with an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent
  • Gold: for supervisors and advanced craft workers with an NVQ Level 3 as a minimum
  • Black: for managers with an NVQ level 4 or higher
  • White: for professionally qualified workers, who are chartered members of professional industry bodies
